HAI Announces Controller Firmware Update for ZigBee and Z-Wave Door Lock Integration

January 10, 2012

Home Automation, Inc. (HAI), leading manufacturer of integrated security and home automation products since 1985, announced the development of enhanced controller firmware to allow two-way integration with both ZigBee and Z-Wave wireless door locks.
Integrating a Z-Wave or ZigBee wireless door lock into an HAI Omni or Lumina home control system means increased access control with cutting-edge electronic locks from various manufacturers.  Users gain the ability to lock and unlock up to 16 doors from HAI Ethernet Touchscreens, keyfobs, and remotely via mobile Apple/Android devices.  The HAI controller can lock and unlock the locks, in addition to monitoring the state of the locks.  HAI systems may even be configured to automatically set lighting, music, and temperature based on the locked/unlocked status of the door.
Compatible products that HAI has tested include options from Kwikset, Yale, and Schlage.  The ZigBee integration has been specifically verified with the Black & Decker Kwikset SmartCode locks, but it should work with other locks that support the standard ZigBee Home Automation profile lock cluster.  Additionally, the Z-Wave integration has been specifically verified with the Kwikset SmartCode deadbolt and entry set, Yale Evolution deadbolt, and Schlage Z-Wave deadbolt locks.
HAI expects the ZigBee and Z-Wave lock integrations to be available during January 2012.  The door lock integrations will be compatible with all Ethernet-enabled Omni and Lumina controllers, including Omni Pro II, Omni IIe, Lumina Pro, and Lumina, utilizing firmware version 3.10 or later.  The Z-Wave integration requires a Leviton RF+3 Serial Interface Module, Leviton Part Number, VRC0P.  The ZigBee integrations require usage of HAI’s Zigbee Interface Module, HAI Part Number, 81A00-3ZB, running firmware 14.08 or later.
“HAI’s engineers have further enhanced the robust controller firmware with a much-desired third-party product feature,” explained Jay McLellan, HAI President & CEO.  “Business owners and homeowners will take comfort knowing whether all doors are locked and fully secure, as opposed to simply knowing whether or not they were closed.”
HAI products are available through a worldwide network of Distributors and installing Dealers in over 80 countries.  For more information on HAI, please visit www.homeauto.com or email sales@homeauto.com

“Crestron Connected™” Initiative to Establish Standard for Interoperability of Commercial and Consumer Electronics Products

January 9, 2012

Crestron today introduced its Crestron Connected™ initiative, which provides the framework for a distributed cloud-based control system. Collaborating with leading manufacturers of commercial and home electronics products, Crestron is embedding its control platform intelligence in a wide selection of source equipment and display devices such as Blu-ray Disc® players, flat panel HD TVs, and audio/video receivers. Products with Crestron Connected inside can be easily connected to any home or enterprise network using standard Ethernet cable. And seamlessly monitored, managed and controlled from any web-enabled laptop computer or mobile device, such as an Apple® iPod®, iPad® or Android™ smartphone or tablet through Crestron Fusion RV™ software, with no programming required.

Crestron Connected provides an easy to implement out-of-the-box solution. Simply open a secure web page and every device on the network is instantly displayed. Crestron Fusion RV is then used to monitor, manage and control all electronic components in any room at any location around the globe. Integrators and IT managers can even get instant text or email notifications if, for example, a projector lamp fails or a device loses power.

“We need to evolve from a traditional hardwired, centralized control scheme to a distributed, cloud-based architecture,” said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron VP of Technology. “Crestron Connected is an important first step toward enabling different products to talk together to create smarter homes and buildings. This new technology allows for easy, fast, and affordable implementation regardless of the size and complexity of your environment.”

Traditionally, control companies create a unique control module for every brand and product. A vast library of control modules is, therefore, required to create an integrated program, which is then uploaded to a central processor. All products are then hardwired back to the processor.

Crestron is taking the opposite approach. Now, to ensure stability and consistent interoperability between devices, Crestron is embedding its control intelligence in popular hardware and home electronics, eliminating the central processor and the need for hardwiring back to the headend.

“We’re embedding the protocols in all the devices so that they establish a unified communication scheme,” Bargetzi says. “The advantage is that devices will no longer need to connect to the processor directly; everything connects to the cloud locally and communicates over the network.”

Devices that feature Crestron Connected inside can simply connect directly to the network from its Ethernet port. With plug-and-play and auto-discovery support, the need to program a central processor to translate all the different “languages” is effectively eliminated.

“For years everyone talked about interoperability, but that was never achieved because, in a competitive marketplace, every manufacturer implements the ‘standard’ differently.” explains Bargetzi. “With Crestron Connected we can achieve true interoperability among independently manufactured products using cloud-based processing. This is the direction our industry is going, and we’re committed to leading the way.”

HAI’s OmniTouch Pro provides HAI interfaces on third-party Windows Touchscreens.  The VoIP Intercom is point-to-point from one Touchscreen to another, with the ability to communicate between HAI IP Touchscreens and third-party Touchscreens.  Dealers can associate supported surveillance cameras with any intercom station, allowing homeowners to both speak with and see their guest.  The intercom features manual accept/reject options, but also possesses the ability to auto-answer.  To ensure privacy, the intercom features a do-not-disturb mode.
Local settings at each OmniTouch Pro Touchscreen (and each OmniTouch 5.7e) control intercom volume levels (for both voice levels and ring levels) as well as privacy options (auto-answer, do not disturb, and mute).  The screen will notify the homeowner where the message originated (front door, guest bedroom, etc).
OmniTouch Pro is available in eight different languages.  In addition to the upcoming 6-license bundle, HAI currently offers a 3-license bundle (HAI Part Number 1131X3) for three different third-party Touchscreen installations.  The VoIP functionality and the 1131X6 Bundle are expected to be available in the 2nd Quarter of 2012.
“Our customers will be thrilled with the addition of the VoIP functionality to the OmniTouch Pro software, as well as the new bundle to reduce installation costs” explained Allison Read, HAI International Sales Manager.  “Home and business owners may use their favorite Windows tablet to see and speak with someone at the gate, in addition to activating lighting, and either opening the gate or notifying authorities.”

Crestron Unveils the Most Powerful Single Gang Touch Screen For Home and Building Control

December 20, 2011

Crestron today announced that its new line of petite 2.8″ touch screens is now shipping. Available in two models, the TPMC-3SM and TPMC-3SMD provide the same complete control functionality as the larger TPMC-4SM line, while offering a discreet, stylish and affordable way to add the latest Crestron control technology into your home or corporate setting. Easily installed on a single gang wall box, the TPMC-3SM enables users convenience of one-touch control of lights, climate, home theaters, multiroom audio, and more, while remaining virtually invisible.

“TPMC-3SM consolidates every controller you have into a beautiful, ultra-modern device, yet it’s affordable, and simple enough for anyone to use,” said Sean Goldstein, Crestron VP of Marketing. “Remove all the unattractive wall acne such as multiple switches, dimmers, thermostats, and even the several remotes you’re always looking for, and in a fraction of the wall space you can control virtually every system in your home.”

Enterprise network room scheduling with TPMC-3SM   TPMC-3SM works with Crestron Fusion RV™ software to deliver a powerful room scheduling solution for office buildings and other large facilities. Installed outside the entrance to every meeting room, the bright 2.8″ LCD display provides an immediate view of each room’s availability. Look up the calendar for any room on the network and reserve the room right on-the-spot. Network room scheduling across the enterprise has never been easier.

With a just few button presses, TPMC-3SM lets users book conference rooms using popular scheduling platforms such as Outlook®, Lotus Notes®, and R25®. Simply select the room location, meeting time and AV presentation resources needed, and equipment will be warmed up and ready to use when the instructor arrives. Scheduling conflicts are eliminated and instructors can begin presentations promptly, without worrying about room availability or “setting up” AV gear.

Additional pushbuttons provide one-touch access to commonly used functions. The “Today” button jumps to the current day view, while the “Close” button quickly closes the currently displayed page. Touching “Select” button provides a quick way to view a meeting’s details, or select a time slot to reserve a room. “Down” and “Up” buttons enable fast scrolling through the day’s schedule. Dual-color green and red buttons give passersby a clear indication of a room’s status at-a-glance.

Home Control with TPMC-3SMD For homeowners, the integrated home technology experience has never been this simple and cool. TPMC-3SMD enables customizable touch screen graphics and icons for controlling lights, temperature, home theater, multiroom audio, security cameras, iTunes® libraries and more. With a tap on the color screen, any home control feature you desire is fast, fun and easy. Built-in streaming video lets you monitor security cameras and see what’s playing on your Blu-ray player, media server or cable TV. Browse through playlists and internet radio stations while viewing cover art and song information.

Additional pushbuttons give you even more control on tap. Adjust audio volume, scroll through movie titles and TV channels, set temperature and lighting levels in every room. Two backlit hard key buttons may be assigned to access your choice of control pages on the touch screen, or to control audio/video system power and room lighting with a single press.

“Whether in the home or corporate environment, the new 3SM line gives homeowners, companies, architects and interior designers the best of both worlds,” said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron VP of Technology. “It combines the most our powerful touch screen control capabilities into a compact, gorgeous device that’s less than three inches long. People will be amazed at what this little device can do.”

Installation is simple, clean and hassle-free. An Ethernet connection from your home network or corporate LAN is all that’s needed to wire both models. PoE (Power over Ethernet) eliminates the need for a local power supply or any dedicated power wiring, which allows greater mounting flexibility in both new construction and retrofits.
